Eagleview Robotics Rocks!

The MN FIRST Lego League has approved Eagleview as a site for official regional competition in the fall. This means we'll host 8-10 other teams in a fall meet. This will be a qualifying tournament for state level competition in January '08. No date has been set yet, but the weekend before Thanksgiving and the second weekend in December are likely.

The North Itasca Electric Cooperative's Operation Round Up board of directors selected the Eagleview Robotics Adventure for a $250 grant. Many thanks! Thanks to the generous support of Operation Round Up, Williams Septic and Electric, Goodhope Township, and Max Township, we will be able to field Division I and II teams. We still need 2 laptop computers. If your business is ready to replace some older machines please let us know!

Eagleview Will Field Two Robotics Teams

Thanks to the generous support of Operation Round Up ($240), Max Township ($100), Goodhope Township ($500) Eagleview will be able to field two robotics teams next fall. Both Division I, grades 4-6, and Division II, grades 7-9, will practice at Eagleview with a schedule determined by the team members and coaches.

In addition to joining the national and state level FIRST Lego Leagues, Eagleview will host competiton among area teams next winter. (Dates to be determined.) Charter Board Ready to Split from the Eagleview Foundation

Our community needs a school! Our community needs a library! Our community needs a tech center! Our community needs a clinic! Jobs! Child care!

When the Foundation first formed last summer, and mailed a needs survey out in the fall, we received a lot of suggestions for what we should do to make our community a better place to live. People were not only ready to ask for things, many were ready to roll up their sleeves and make things happen.

Founded with a mission of bringing lifelong learning to the community, the Foundation took on as many projects as possible with limited funds and volunteers. Now we are ready to see the charter school board form as a separate non-profit and focus just on making the Eagleview Community Charter School a reality. While many of the faces are the same, and the Foundation will continue to work closely with the school, I felt it was time to remind folks that the Eagleview Community Foundation is more than "the school."

The Grand Rapids Herald Review quoted me back in August when I said it just doesn't make good business sense to have a school building that is only used 6 hours a day 174 days a year. I still feel that way and hope if you have thought about getting involved with the Foundation, but didn't think we'd have something for you because you don't have school aged children, think again.

We have many irons in the fire. Here's a list, but you could be the one to add something:

Community Technology Center
Community Library
Eagleview Robotics Adventure (for kids in grades 4-9 from any school)
With the city council, writing a Blue Cross/Blue Shield Healthy Communities Grant
Blandin Community Leadership Program
Your Idea Here

Our next Eagleview Community Foundation board meeting will be on Thursday, May 10th at 6:30 PM in the music room at Eagleview School. Stop by, grab a cup of coffee and join in.

Community Technology Center Will Open May 19th

Jackie Schuemann joins the Eagleview Community Foundation as our first paid employee. An experienced web site developer, and one of those people who is on the computer all the time, Jackie has been busy ordering new equipment for the center.

Now we're looking for teen volunteers interested in helping out at the center. In exchange for their labor, the teens will get free computer instruction, Internet access, and their choice of volunteer incentives like MP-3 players or digital cameras. If you know an interested high school student visit the "contact the foundation" link at the right and give us a call or send an e-mail message.

Eagleview Foundation Wins $10,000 Charter Planning Grant, IRS Approves Charitable Status

Some good news after a couple not so hopeful posts:

The St. Paul Foundation has awarded the foundation a $10,000 grant to be used for completing our charter school application. This means we'll be able to hire some help to design our curriculum and can reimburse volunteers for travel expenses to the Minnesota Department of Education's mandatory training.

If you haven't filed your 2006 taxes yet and made a contribution to the ECF from Oct. 4-Dec. 31. '06 go ahead and claim it as a charitable deduction. We have our IRS charitable status letter, also known as 501 (c) (3) determination in hand! Besides helping us solicit donations, being an officially recognized public charity means we can apply for many more grants. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all who contributed the first seed money we needed just to have enough to pay the fees for the process. Look for a direct mail campaign this summer.
